Cup and Saucer - inv. 1014
The cup and saucer are decorated with battle scenes, rendered with a miniaturist technique and a very rich palette. Great care has also been lavished on the landscape backgrounds. The lists of works produced by the manufacture of Capodimonte record that this kind of decoration was in fashion only in 1744-1745, when the principal decorator was Giovanni Caselli. In this case the subjects are taken from two etchings by Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630). His rich repertory, repeated in numerous prints of the eighteenth century, was one of the most widely used in the decoration of china.
