This type of helmet was in use in Asia and Russia as early as the thirteenth century. Widely adopted in Turkey, it inspired the form of the European basinet in the seventeenth century. Sometimes in boundary regions weapons and armour of the enemy armies used to be taken either for use or for their manufacture as gifts or in trade. This steel helmet is engraved, bronzed and gilded; it. lacks a maker’s mark but it was clearly produced in southern Germany for the Islamic market.
