Shinkeisai - 5617
This netsuke, of compact form, shows a landscape with pavilions inhabited by tiny figures and topped by pine trees (matsu, 松); the houses rest on rocks and partly on a stone wall. The signature Shinkeisai is placed under the piece base.
The author is Shinkeisai Masatoshi whose style is very similar to that one of Tomochika workshop. Among his subjects are prevalent figures and animals. He should however be remembered in particular because of landscapes for which he was famous and of which he made many variations. Generally these, as the other example in the Lanfranchi collection with the signature Masatoshi (正 利), were very compact, of triangular section and not dyed. The himotoshi was characterized by small holes formed under the base.
In the Lanfranchi collection there is a Daruma signed Tomochika.
