Giovan Francesco Gessi - inv. 1053
The Virgin is tenderly holding the Child, seated on a cushion, and Saint Anthony of Padua, recognisable by the large lily. The saint is about to kiss the Redeemer’s foot, while He leans forward to touch the saint’s head, blessing him. The brilliant colours, although slightly darkened with time, emphasise the dense pictorial quality of the work. The intimate nature of the composition is well fitting an image for private worship of the Paduan saint. The painting dates to the first half of the 1630s.
Here, despite the small format, Gessi shows himself to be a worthy follower of his master, Guido Reni.
