The subject is taken from the Old Testament (Book of Tobias, 5: 10–16): the archangel Raphael presents himself incognito to the blind Tobias, offering to accompany his son Tobias to Media. This is a very faithful copy, even in size, of a famous drawing by Bernardino Luini, datable to about 1525, now in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, donated by cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1618.

Restored in the 19th century by Giuseppe Molteni, the panel was considered a work by Luini until the beginning of the 20th century.

The author of this copy was probably a Lombard copyist active in about 1630, when Luini’s work was again much appreciated as a model for religious painting and many copies of his pictures were made to satisfy collectors’ requests. In this specific case, noting the effort made to be faithful to the original in the Ambrosiana, it might possibly be a painting exercise within the Ambrosiana Academy.
